Kids' Lunches For School

I'm putting out the call for a brown bag lunch discussion! Specifically for kids, though you're welcome to talk about your own brown-bag experiences if you have them.

I haven't spent much brainpower on a cost-benefit analysis yet, and I don't have a good repertoire of easy, healthy things to send with my kids for lunch yet either; suggestions in both of those realms are highly encouraged.

I spent $1.35 a day on my daughter's lunch and $2.00 a day on my son's. Can I do a better job, cost-wise, than that if I send them lunches from home? Will I do a better job, health-wise, than the schools will?

What have your experiences been? What do you do for your kids' lunches?

  1. I don't think I could swing less than $1.35. Claire tells me they get a meat (hot dogs or nuggets), a fruit, a vegetable, a starch and a drink. Because it's a school lunch and subsidized, I don't even try to compete.

  2. Yeah, I agree with that assessment; $1.35 is pretty hard to beat and they seem to do a pretty good job. And since the girls only go twice a week, even if it wasn't all too healthy, I'm not going to sweat it for twice a week. It's more Drake's lunches I wonder about. It costs me roughly $40 a month to feed him hot lunch. If I planned out some brown bag stuff and was able to buy in bulk, would I save money? And would it be worth my time to do it? I think they do a pretty decent job at his school with variety too, we get a menu every month, and he seems to like it. I just worry that I'm spending unnecessarily.

But then, let's say I saved 50 cents a day; that's what, ten dollars a month? Times roughly nine months? OK, that's $90 or so, I guess that would be worth it. IF I could get a lunch together for $1.50 or less. Hmmm.
